The photo story PROGRESS is Ram’s attempt to visually depict the meaning of progress in Singapore using the narrative of street photography. It is a unique perspective of Singapore.
Discipline leads to progress
We learn discipline through various means. Parents lay the foundation for us in our childhood years. This is augmented by curricular and co-curricular activities. These then develop over a period of time as we mature and learn from our interactions with the society. The discipline embedded in each of us is reflected in our day to day activities. This self-discipline manifests into the collective conscious of the community and nation we live and becomes part of nation's value system.
I believe it is this value system that contributes to the progress of a nation.
While there are traditional indicators such as economic and social to denote progress, what happens on the streets is also an equally good measure of the same, if not better. I believe it is very true in the case of Singapore, possibly the only country in the world to achieve all around progress and development in a single generation. Progress has been achieved through a concerted effort on the part of the government and a cooperative effort on the part of its citizens. It is this effort that has earned Singapore a pride of place in the comity of nations.
PROGRESS series showcases this effort visually thus providing a unique perspective of city-state of Singapore.
The images represent fulcrum of discipline embedded within the society. For the elder generation it helps to reflect on the past and derive a sense of satisfaction and for the younger generation act as a pointer to sustain and protect the future.
Wishing Singapore a happy 50th anniversary and beyond.
